ㄷ Irregular Conjugation (ㄷ 불규칙)

Conjugation & Pattern

• 1) Irregular ㄷ stems + vowel ending -> Change ㄷ to ㄹ: 듣다 (listen) -> 들어요, 걷다 (walk) -> 걸어요, 묻다 (ask) -> 물어요, 싣다 (load) -> 실어요.
• 2) Regular ㄷ stems (do NOT change): 닫다 (close -> 닫아요), 받다 (receive -> 받아요), 믿다 (believe -> 믿어요), 얻다 (obtain -> 얻어요).

Detailed Usage

Certain verbs ending in ㄷ change their final consonant to ㄹ when followed by an ending that begins with a vowel.

   저는 매일 아침 한국 노래를 들어요.

   Jeoneun maeil achim hanguk noraereul deureoyo.

   I listen to Korean songs every morning.

   공원에서 친구와 같이 걸었어요.

   Gongwoneseo chinguwa gati georeosseoyo.

   I walked together with my friend in the park.

   모르는 것은 선생님께 물으세요.

   Moreuneun geoseun seonsaengnimkke mureuseyo.
